CHAPTER 19

The next morning, Cavell had risen before dawn and rode out from his secluded compound in the forest.

After driving his Harley-Davidson for twenty-four miles, Cavell pulled off Highway 87, south of the minuscule town of Sunflower, and headed east for a further three miles to an abandoned hangar that was once used for a small airfield.

The elevation drop from Pineland to this part of the cactus-studded Sonoran Desert was around three thousand feet, which meant the daytime temps sweltered to triple digits. It was only 6:30 a.m. and the temperature was already nearing ninety-five degrees, so today was going to be a cooker.

He drove through the open bay whose doors had long ago been hauled off by locals, pulling into the right-hand corner, where a blue Dodge Ram was parked alongside a black Land Rover.

Killing the engine, Cavell dismounted and removed his sunglasses. He walked towards the two men leaning against the Ram, both of them extending hands. Cavell pulled them in closer, giving them bro-hugs instead. “Sure is good to see you boys,” he said.

“Likewise,” replied Davey Tanner with a smile.

“Seems like old times, brother,” said Levi Tanner.

While Aiden knew people threw about the familial term, to him it struck a deep chord. The Tanner boys were as close to family as he’d ever had and probably would ever have.

While he was in prison, he had been taken in by the Serbian crime syndicate, whose protection had enabled him to survive that hellish pit. But it also meant he was permanently indebted to them, though Cavell thought indentured was a more accurate term.

“Nice wheels,” said Davey as he thrust his chin towards the motorcycle.

“Yeah, sure is a sweet ride, and this is the right state to own a chopper,” replied Cavell.

“You remember when we stole those ten-speed bikes off them ninth-grade girls when we were kids?” said Davey with a huge grin.

“After we pelted the shit out of ’em with apples from that old guy’s yard,” said Levi.

Cavell let out a belly laugh. “Damn, they never saw it coming either. We just kept popping up from that ditch like gophers. They were damn near unconscious by the time we rode off on their bikes.” He pursed his lips. “If I had to do it all over again, I would have dragged that redhead into the grass and had some fun with her.”

Davey folded his arms. “The cash we got from those bikes let me buy my first set of boots and a cowboy belt. No more fucking hand-me-downs. I finally had something of my own.”

Cavell nodded. “I bought a Buck folding knife that I had for years and a jimmy-tool for breaking into cars.”

“I put my money on a boxing match in Phoenix,” said Levi. “First time dealing with a bookie, but the way that fight went, it seemed like you guys were the only two who came out ahead.”

Their laughter filled the small hangar as they recounted a few more tales from their youth.

Cavell returned to the Harley, removing a water bottle from the leather saddlebag and swigging down some of the warm fluid.
